DIY Burlap Hanging Wall Banner

I'm excited to be back today to bring another installment of the "Create with Cricut Challenge" put on by Amber Simmons and Katie of Clarks Condensed. If you didn't get a chance to see my previous projects for the challenge you can find my felt project here and my cereal box project here

If you're unfamiliar with the challenge, each month they choose a mystery material for us to create with using our Cricut and this month, the material is a burlap! I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of burlap. It's messy, hard to work with and a little too rustic for me. When I went to my local Joann's to grab some, I was intrigued by the black burlap. It felt much less rustic and even a little modern.

I'm a big fan of the wall banner trend that I've been seeing lately, so I decided to try to make one out of burlap. (Check out this post to see how I created one with a more traditional cotton fabric.) I was skeptical about how the burlap would cut, even with a stabilizer, but it cut wonderfully!

Supplies

Burlap (Mine is from Joann's)
Dowel
Bakers Twine
Cricut BrightPad (optional)

Cricut EasyPress (or a standard iron)

I started by designing my file in Design Space.

(Lately when working with vinyl and iron on vinyl I've been putting a box around my sentiment for easier weeding.)

Like I said, I was pretty skeptical with how the burlap would cut so I added some stabilizer, loaded it into my machine and said a little prayer.

When I went to pull it off my mat, I audibly gasped.

Look how clean that cut is! On BURLAP! I was shocked (pleasantly of course).

From there it was time for the fun part. Using the EasyPress settings guide, I added my iron on to the burlap (the Raspberry color is my new favorite). Then using my glue gun I added my fringe trim (I've been looking for an excuse to use this trim from Hobby Lobby, isn't it adorable??). I used my crop a dile to add holes to the top of the banner to hang it from my dowel, and that's it!

To my surprise, I actually ended up enjoying working with burlap, something I never thought would happen. Don't forget to check back next month, when the challenge material is going to be tissue paper!
